TRADITIONAL WARLI FOLK ART, INDIA

Warli is the name of the tribe residing in Thane District in Maharashtra, on the northern outskirts of Mumbai, extending to the Gujarat border.  The Warlis have a unique sense of design.  Their art depicts the simple lives of the people and their surroundings.  People, animals and trees form a loose rhythmic pattern in the paintings.  The result is a swinging movement that depicts the daily routine of the Warlis.  Traditionally done by the Warli women folk these paintings decorated the mud walls of their houses.  They painted scenes of their daily lives and routine using only one colour….white.  The white colour was derived from ground rice flour.  Today Warli Art is done on cloth, paper and on various other surfaces using acrylic colours.  Their art, has become very popular.

MADHUBANI  FOLK ART, INDIA

Madhuban Art as in Warli, is mainly done by the women folk in the family.  The mud walls and the floors, within and outside the houses, are painted in bright colours.  Vegetable dyes are used for colour, though several artists now use acrylic colours instead of home made dyes.  The figures in the Madhuban design have their faces in profile. The rest of their body faces the front.  The borders in the painting are decorative, done in geometrical, floral or animal patterns.  The animals though very stylized, are easily recognized for what they are.  During the Bihar (a state of India) famine of 1964/1965 some of the women of Madhuban reproduced their designs on handmade paper and started marketing their paintings.  Madhuban Art has now become a much appreciated art form.
